Dress Pants

yesterday I walked to work in light dress pants, and a linen suit jacket. The grass was green, the leaves on the tress were budding, and the brids were chirping. Today, I took the c-train while bundled up in a hat, and a Gore-tex shell. The grass may very well still be green, but right now it’s buried under all this snow so it’s hard to tell, and the only birds I saw were a couple of seriously pissed off Geese hiding out on some poor guy’s balcony. Ahh, spring time on the prairies. It’s really hard to dress for weather changes like this, and they happen all the time here. For anyone who’s feeling a little at a loss for ways to cope with this weather, I wrote you this post.
First thing is to get yourself into a well-made soft-shell jacket. As opposed to your typical rain jackets, soft-shells are not composed of a Nylon layer over GoreTex (or a similar material). Soft-shells are typically made out of a blend of nylon, spandex, lycra, and polyester. They aren’t intrinsically waterproof, but they do have a durable water repellent added to them. A soft-shell jacket will keep you warm and dry in most weather, and many people in Calgary wear them habitually so you won’t look out of place. The catch is that the waterproofing won’t last forever. Every year or two you’ll have to buy some wash-in waterproofing to renew the water repellancy of your jackte. However, considering that it’s a $10 bottle, and you only have to do it once a year, it’s still a pretty good deal.
It might also be a good idea to acquire some Gore Tex lined shoes. More and more styles are being made with this feature added to them, and it works remarkably well. Keep in mind, that while the shoes are porous enough that they still breathe, they do not breathe well. This means you’ll have to be careful not to let them get too stinky. Also, they are very waterproof but there really isn’t any material, anywhere, that is actually 0 waterproof. However, in terms of Gore Tex lined shoes, unless you try and stand in a creek for longer than a few seconds, you don’t have much to worry about. There are even some shoes being made with a waterproof liner that are modeled after dress shoes, so you can wear them to work without having to switch out when you get into the office.
Your legs may get a little wet, there’s just no way to wear rain pants around and still command the slightest iota of respect. However, there’s still a couple of tricks you can try to keep dry this spring. Toques, gloves, and layered clothing. Keep a toque and a pair of light gloves at your office, wear some layers, and you’ll never get surprised by inclement weather at work again.
